In 1882 Pabst beer started putting a blue silk ribbon on every bottle of beer that they sold, representing the national and international competitions they had finished first in.
By 1892 a million feet of ribbon a year was being hand tied around their bottles and becoming so well known that they changed the name of their beer to Pabst Blue Ribbon.
The silk ribbon temporarily ceased in World War One due to a global silk shortage, but continued until 1950 when it was finally replaced by a blue ribbon on the label.
